I got the Jeni’s ice cream cookbooks a little out of order. I found Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream Desserts at a super steep discount at a bookstore and couldn’t resist taking it straight to the register. And on the way home, I made a checklist in my head of all the many recipes I couldn’t wait to try and pored over the beautiful photos. Because seriously, this cookbook is gorgeous. I almost want to buy a second copy of the book just so I can cut out the pages and hang them on my wall.
The first third of this book is more ice cream recipes a level up from the last batch of recipes in “Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams at Home”. They include sorbets, custards, frozen yogurts, and dairy-free ice creams (creme sans lait) as well as the more involved ice creams that might require you to bake a cake or make an elaborate dessert just to throw into the churning base.
The second third of the book includes desserts and baked goods that pair perfectly with ice cream. You can use them to make ice cream cakes, sandwiches, sundaes, or plain on their own- either way, the result will be delicious!
The last section of the book is full of beautiful inspiration for your ice cream creations. This is the part where you’ll be tempted to rip out the pages to add to your bulletin board that you’ll stare at until your need for an insanely amazing dessert becomes too much for you to handle. With this book, you won’t be allowed to make boring ice cream anymore. You’ll have to make a sticky sweet sauce to go on top or a cake to go beneath or cookies to sandwich around it. Plain old ice cream just won’t be enough anymore and it will be the most delicious problem of your life.
What I love:
The incredible photos. This book is insanely gorgeous and so inspiring.
What I don’t love:
The use of cornstarch and corn syrup (as with their first cookbook). Again, it’s purely personal preference!
Recipes worth trying:
Sweet Cream Ice Cream
Black Forest Cake Ice Cream
Salty Vanilla Frozen Custard
Corn Syrup Custard
Loads of sundae and dessert inspiration using the recipes included in the book.
